We never had this problem with Windows XP. The device doesnt even get listed in Movie Maker. Returned the cc to Sony, they allegedly replaced a fuse and the ieee1394 circuitry...still not working. I plug the 4pin into the camera turn it on, put it in VCR/Playback mode and press play, then plug the 6pin into the card. Check This Out

Western Digital still provides Firewire connection on some of their external hard drives but is offering sufficient USB 3 units for the time being. When I go and look on "my computer" there is no drive or folderlisted that could be the camera. Before the lowest I could go was 320, now it gets down to 128. I had to update the drivers for the Disk Drivein Device Manager using the automatic driver update.

They both seem to work in FW400 mode but not in FW800 mode. Try plugging into a different FireWire port.
