I couldn't install the MFC from its original CD on my Win 7, since there are no suitable drivers, so my other machines (XP) are connected to the MFC on the Next click Start then right click Computer in the Window that opens under Computer Name, Domain and Workgroup Settings check that the Workgroup name is set to WORKGROUP (this SHOULD be My Xp machine could see the share - but not access it until I added this.
At foist that was not enaf and i still got the error, but i runned network setup wizard and who-al-a, i can connect to xp machine and its shares. When i click "connect" like you recommend, I get an "access is denied" error even though it is set to share on the XP machine. THANKS GUYS! They must be in the same workgroup and have compatible network sharing settings but if you pay a bit of attention it should work fine.
