I have personally faced this problem while using Windows 8 Pro. Could the answer have to do with the several previous updates that were preparing WIN7/8 for WIB10? I create an image (Ghost) of my system, once a month and usually have 6-8 to choose from before the oldest gets replaced by the newest. Or to put it another way, why do two machines have more than two dozens updates waiting and no icon notification whatsoever?

The Customize options in the tray don't include the Windows Update icon, and it's not one of the choices in the Turn System Icons Off or On menu. I did download the first Windows Update Notifier but it crashed my system so I deleted it. Windows 10 Update Icon So I was hoping this works for Win 7 x64 SP1 and might try it out. Well... I think this is a beast of another species. The updates were there but I only remembered to check for them because I read the post here at DSL Reports that they were out. check over here What confuses me is the Windows Host Process that appears.

LOL. This was done for Windows XP... For me it was caused by this one: KB3065987 Windows Update Client for Windows July 2015 UnInstall that update, and the icon should come back. Many times we don't want to waste our Internet bandwidth in downloading huge updates, so using this option we can decide when to download these updates.
Thanks for posting! When the monthly windows updates arrives and has downloaded then you see windows updates available. It is not clear whether this applies only to missing power, network, volume icons or others. Next, I installed KB2952664 and after that, the "upgrade to W10 icon" appeared in the notification area but not the "WU icon ".
Just as vista and 7 seemed to just be xp with a few more browserlike interfaces added (that ended updumping you to the old applets anyways), 8.1 is just an added I have setup update notifications on Windows 7 and the computer has been awfully quiet about them lately.
